confidentiality and privacy
Counselling is a private, confidential arrangement. If you become my client, your counselling will be a private process. I will not normally discuss you or what you have told me with anyone else without your consent and knowledge and you will normally retain complete control over who knows about it. In rare circumstances a counsellor may be required by law to disclose information about counselling and, in keeping with my professional ethical code of practice, if I become aware of very serious risk of harm to self or others, I may judge that additional input (for example, from a GP or other professional) is needed in order to protect someone at risk. As part of maintaining professional standards, all counsellors/therapists routinely review anonymised samples of their work with a clinical supervisor who is a senior colleague also bound by a professional ethical code of practice.
Counselling involves keeping confidential written records which I do in accordance with professional ethical practice and data protection law (EU General Data Protection Regulations), under which clients have legal rights including the entitlement to request access to records relating to themselves.
I will provide further information about client records and data protection if you become my client, at which point we will discuss and agree terms of working together.
If you make an enquiry, you will give me your name, your phone number and/or your email address. This information will be held confidentially and securely by me, solely for the purpose of communicating with you regarding your enquiry and, if you don’t become my client, will be deleted within two weeks from the point at which this communication finishes. Electronic data I hold is kept on password protected devices accessed only by me, including mobile phone, tablet and desktop computer. My website does not collect visitor data of any kind.
I am the single ‘data controller’ and no client’s or enquirer’s data are accessed by anyone else unless required by law or in the event of my being incapacitated, in which case a designated professional colleague will conduct my clinical affairs as necessary.
